Recruiting Information & Tips

Here are some tips and information to get you started. We cover all this and more in our Stampede Lax Recruiting Seminars in May.

What should you be doing as a 2019, 2020, 2021 or 2022 HS Graduate?

  • STUDY, STUDY, STUDY

    • There is more ACADEMIC/MERIT Scholarship Money available than Athletic. PERIOD.
    • Coaches want to see effort in the classroom...you’re going to be a STUDENT-athlete. The STUDENT part is important
    • Use your lacrosse to get you into a better school than you could academically on your own!

  • VISIT COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES

What are you looking for in a school?

  • Small, Medium, Big School?
  • Urban, Suburban, Rural, College Town?
  • How far away from home do you want to be?
  • What part of the country do you want to be located in?
  • What academic programs are you interested in? Liberal Arts? Pre-professional (pre-med, pre-law, pre-vet)? Research? 4+1 MBA Program?

  • MAKE YOUR COLLEGE LIST

    • A good list should include:
      • Reach Schools - schools that are a little above your academic or athletic profile
      • Realistic Schools - schools that you should be able to get into academically and athletically
      • Safety Schools - schools that you will most likely be able to get into academically and athletically (without any help from a coach)

  • CONTACT COLLEGE COACHES!

    • Emails
      • Personalize the email (and double check your addressing it to the right coach)
      • Write your own email...your parents shouldn’t be emailing coaches
      • In your INTRODUCTORY EMAIL: Keep it brief but include all pertinent information (graduation year, position, HS, Club program, GPA, SAT/ACT scores if you have them, interest in a particular academic program, something special about yourself, awards such as All-American/All-WNY)
      • Follow up after tournaments (and know that DI coaches cannot return your email until September 1 of your Junior Year)
    • Phone Calls
      • Once you’ve established a relationship with a coach, use a phone call to express interest and find out more information
    • Text Messaging
      • Use to set up a time to talk with a coach and once you’ve set up a visit to confirm details etc.

ONCE YOU’VE NARROWED DOWN YOUR LIST:

  • ATTEND CAMPS & CLINICS

      • Work with coaches, meet potential teammates and see campus all at once!

  • DO YOUR HOMEWORK TO FIND THE BEST FIT

      • Ask questions of the coach, players on the team and former players who have played for that coach
      • Meet with Admissions
      • If you know what you want to study, meet with someone in that Department
      • Visit campus--attend a class and watch practice
      • Be proactive and follow up (don’t be afraid to go after what you want!)
      • Be open to schools you may not know much about at first
